Meeting Mr Blumenthal

May 27, 2011 in Uncategorized

This morning we had the privilege of meeting Heston Blumenthal.

For us that is the holy grail of meeting a chef.

He is one of the most respected chefs in the world and his restaurant The Fat Duck has 3 Michelin stars as well as being voted the Number 1 restaurant in the world in 2005 and consistently being in the top 3 since.

He is in Cape Town for the 2011 Good Food & Wine Show and we were invited to a meet and greet at the beautiful Cape Grace Hotel at the V&A Waterfront. (Tickets to see his show at the GFWS are R850 – a steep price tag we know – but not if you consider who and what you are getting to watch.)

And what a pleasure it was to meet the great man.

He is clever, funny, charming, trendy (yes very trendy), down-to-earth and an absolute pleasure to chat to. He has strong  ties to South Africa (his dad went to school at SACS in Cape Town and his sister lives here) and he has been here about 20 times.

And he absolutely loves it here, he thinks Cape Town is the most beautiful city in the world.

What more can we say? One of the world’s greatest chefs, and a truly nice bloke.

It was a pleasure to meet you Mr Blumenthal.

Aren’t you blessed!, I so wanted to see James Martin, but never got to:-( Did see Jonathan of Masterchef Australia and took some pics with him. The show was great though!

  2. We met James and Jonathan – both lovely! Jonathan is married to a Bloem girl! How cool! I must say they are all very cool guys… But Heston was the highlight!

  3. you are so lucky! I cannot wait to cook with Jonathan tonight, and for the master class with James Martin tomorrow :)

  4. You are sooooo lucky!! I never knew that he has family in SA – great!!

  5. Oh wow, so jealous! Glad to hear he’s a nice guy too, not just an amazing chef!

  6. He’s sooooooo cool, ‘cos he likes to poison his guests!!

  7. Wow! Caro, what an honor that must of been! Awesome stuff! You are so lucky! x

  8. Well done, i am sure you must have relished every minute of your meet & greet time.

  9. I happily paid my R850 expecting something special, only to leave the auditorium well & truly
ripped off.To watch a video & hear Mr Blumenthal
answer the odd question while Capsicum Chefs disturbed the “captivated” audience entering &
leaving the auditorium was not what I anticipated.

  10. What a fantastic opportunity, I would love to see him in action so to speak! I do hope when the Good Food and Wine Show hits KZN this year, the organisers are able to bring in a few interesting Chefs. I am really tired of the same chefs that we are forced to watch year after year. Its really disappointing.

  11. sjoe that sux, I would have been seriously annoyed!
