Spaghetti Bolognaise

I was watching Jamie O the other day making a Bolognaise very different to what I usually do.. and it sounded actually very very nice.. so here is a sort of Jamie O adoption of Gaby’s Bolognaise..

Note to Tandy…   its more than 5 ingredients .. but I guess we can count the veggies as ONE??:)

While I was cooking away, looking out of the window “my” birds also came by to have their dinner J I hung a bird feeder just outside my kitchen window and its sooo nice to watch them every day !

1 pkt of Ostrich steaks ( I don’t cook with beef anymore Ostrich is just as nice and NO fat !!)

1 green pepper chopped

2 grated carrots

1 grated celery stalk

2 red onions chopped

1 can of tomato with chilli

½ bottle of good red wine

2 sachets tomato paste

3 Tsp Italien herb mix

2 garlic cloves

2 bay leaves

2 Tbsp Nomu Spanish rub

1 Tbsp sugar

Cut into quite thin and small chunks and brown in a bit of olive oil.

Add all the cut and chopped veggies,

the canned tomato and paste together with the herbs and spices and the ½ bottle of red wine. I then also add another cup or 2 of water as the mix in the pot has to be quite liquid.

The trick is now to bring it to the boil and then cut the heat down to the very lowest and cook for at least 2 to 3 hours. If in the course of the cooking the liquid disappears , add another bitjie of wine and water.

The end result needs to be that all the goodies incl meat have boilt smoothish.. ( see photo)

Serve with GOOD spaghetti and freshly grated parmesan .. Buon appetito   J

  1. Looks very tasty! Must admit, ostrich doesn’t appeal to me…

I also watch the birds from my kitchen window, I have 3 feeders – 1 for fruit eaters, 1 for mealies for the doves and a cage with seeds which only the small birds can get into, not the greedy doves :) I like your feeder!

  2. Hehe – its definitely more than 5 ingredients!! Sounds lovely! Ostrich is not that widely available in our parts – and its way more expensive if you do get, probably import tax from the northern/western cape or something… hehe :)

  3. Zab this is fantastic.. i love my birds ! how does a fruit eater feeder look like?

  4. Oooo this looks scrummy!! The bird feeder is a great idea, now I just need a tree to hang it from!! xx

  5. sounds quite delicious – I usually use lamb mince when I can find it :)

  6. thanks Tandy ! good idea also maybe pork mince.. I have seen that around recently!

  7. Yummy, Gabs!! I love the blue bowls and the green plate!!
