Rebel in a Jam!
September 10, 2010 in Sauces & side dishes
So I went back to the fruit vendor and there he was shouting to passing cars: “Berries for de cherries!” I took one box and he said: “Ag vat nogge doos, ‘seblief my Merrim. Díe berries is goed virrie gesondheid. Goed vir enige ding vannie pimples torrie rimpels …”. So I bought another box – just in case he continued with his health advice and mention the C-word (as in colon).
Passing my local Spar, I popped in for today’s bread and there was freshly-made vetkoek. All health considerations were by then out of the window and feeling rebellious because the fruit vendor was so into my health, I bought some vetkoek. Yes. And marscapone cheese, yes – and just to appease my conscience and for my health’s sake, some of the last good oranges of the season.
Here is my crook’s version of my favourite jam. In fact, it’s the only jam that I ever cook or eat, as it contains much less sugar than classic jams. (This blog should really be called ‘I love crooking’ as most of my recipes are crook’s versions of the classic.)
Really, this jam takes no skill and very little time. And you can make small quantities and you need not even sterilize the jar. That is a mission you undertake only if you plan to cook several boxes of berries! This jam is usually eaten within days, so no reason to go to all that schlep! But for safety sake, keep it sealed in the fridge after a week.
Light & Easy Strawberry Jam
