Mushroom stew

April 28, 2013 in Food events, Food shows, Meatless Mondays, Supper, Vegetarian

I plan my dinners mostly around the seasons so I have made a lot of stews and curries lately. Unfortunately after a couple of very cold days the Cape Town weather turned to summer again, so I did not feel comfortable posting recipes that is supposed to be eaten in colder weather. I can however no longer wait to share this mushroom stew recipe with you.

This is a great vegetarian dish that can be served with any type of starch you like!

We went last night and enjoyed it so much that we decided to go for a second time this weekend!

We had so much fun making canapés in the Pick n Pay workshop area!

We also attended some cooking demonstrations in the Chef’s theatre.

But the best of all was the food and we tried quite a number of restaurants fare and were very happy with all of them.

LAVENDER HEART BISCUITS

December 5, 2012 in Baking, Biscuits, Food events

Loads of people asked me about the cookie swap / exchange, after my recent “In my Kitchen” post. The Cape Town Cookie swap was arranged by Katie Coetzee and two fellow bloggers, Hilla from the blog Add to taste and Ishay from the blog Food and the Fabulous.

This is what the invitation said:

”Join us for the second annual feel-good event of its kind in Cape Town, an exchange of good vibes. After the success of our 2011 event we would love get all the food lovers of CPT to gather and share recipes and cheer, whilst sipping away the trials and tribulations of 2012. Another very important aspect of this year’s event will be raising money for Nazareth House.

The low down: Whip out your best recipe, sweet or savoury and bring 60 small cookies or homemade sweets/chocs/goodies/yummies – you are not limited to cookies only. Any and all delicious recipes are welcome! Even no-bake chocs and treats are well come for the non-bakers.

Bring a batch – and 6 copies of the recipe. (Each person will be grouped off into groups of 6, and will swap 10 cookies with each cookie mate. In essence, you go home with 6 x 10 different cookies.)

Also, bring R30 for Nazareth house residents. You’re welcome to bring any store bought, long-life cookies to add to the box for them, if you like.

Stay and chat with old friends and new friends, while sipping on something hot or something cold.

We will have some lovely surprises AND lucky draws. ”

So, that was it, everyone brought 60 cookies and 6 copies of their recipes. Space was limited so we were not divided into groups. Everyone’s cookies were placed on a long table and everyone could take as many of the cookies that they liked. (There were also some gluten-free cookies.)  I got home with a variety looking like this:

 cookies

These were packed and I was lucky enough to get some. Don’t you think it is just so cute?

Biscuits

The best of all is that money was raised for Nazareth house’s residents!

I made these lavender hearts since they are one of my favourite cookies to bake. I just love the texture of the dough. The recipe is an adaption of Kanya Hunt’s recipe.

The lavender can be replaced by rosemary, thyme, grounded coffee beans lemon rind, orange rind or vanilla!

You can also make different sized shaped cookies and stack them together with a little bit of butter icing, like I did for the cookie exchange.

Did you enjoy this, then I am sure you will love my old fashioned ginger biscuits or checker board biscuits or melting moments or shortbread stars with lemon glace!

June 30, 2012 in Food Bloggers Indaba, Food events

I woke up on Sunday, 24 June 2012, feeling very excited! The biggest event on any Food Blogger’s event list, South African Food Bloggers Indaba, was on my agenda for the day!

South African Food Bloggers Indaba

Food Bloggers Conference in South Africa

My daughter and I were both attending the event and we left just after seven in the morning. Outside we were met with a rainy, cold and grey day. The event was taking place at the Pick and Pay Conference centre in Kenilworth. Although cold and grey outside, inside we were met with warmth and one could feel the excitement in the air.

The registration process was extremely efficient and took less than a minute. We received an apron and a Wusthof knive with compliments from  Yuppiechef on arrival.

It was wonderful, seeing old blogger friends again and meeting new ones. It sounded like a family gathering, with all the: “it is so nice to see you again” and “finally we meet!” etc!

I would have loved to socialise a bit longer, but the formal event started too soon with the welcoming done by Paul Raphaely from NoMU, who was the MC for the day. After the welcoming Paul Galatis of Yuppiechef spoke briefly.

Mushroom Pot Pies for Meatless Mondays

May 28, 2012 in Food events, Meals in minutes, Meatless Mondays, Side Dish, Supper, Vegetarian

The girls and I went to the Stellenbosch Fresh Goods Market on Saturday. This is one of our favourite places to go to for breakfast or lunch on a Saturday.

Since BG wrote exam until 12:00, we went there for lunch. The girls both had “bockwurst on a brotchen”. I was torn between a wonderful mushroom kebab, with a variety of exotic mushrooms or mussels. In the end I decided to go for the mussels and it was a great choice! I got seven plumb mussels steamed in garlic, butter and basil and served with bruschetta and a tomato relish for R25!

I could, however not stop thinking about the mushrooms and went to Woolworths yesterday to get some exotic mushrooms, which I haven’t eaten since December last year. I was very surprised to see that Woolworths are still selling 2 punnets (400g) of exotic mushrooms at R30.00! This is really a bargain. The mixture contains a combination of fresh shiitake, portabello, king oyster and shimeji mushrooms.

The pot pies are easy to prepare and take less than 30 minutes. It serves 2 people as a main meal or 4 people as a side dish.

The Cape Town Good Food and Wine Show

May 27, 2012 in Cape town Good Food and Wine show, Food events, Food shows

We went to the Good Food and Wine show on Friday, 25 May. As always it was wonderful. This is one event on the Cape Town Calendar that I don’t want to ever miss! Just think about it: Wonderful wine, delicious food, food demonstrations from the best local and international chefs and all the latest food gadgets, under one roof!

Walking into the show, we could hardly get in… and why? Pete Goffe-Wood, was (as always) doing a demonstration at the Sea Harvest stand. He has been doing this for at least the past three years, but I could hear everybody saying either: “That is Pete Goffe-Wood from Master Chef or “That is the Master chef Guy!!!!” I have known Pete for years, since he cooked in the Bayside Mall (with Jenny Morris) about ten years ago, and I always thought that he is THE MASTER CHEF and THE Master entertainer!!

Jenny Morris was also in her element at the Spekko Rice stall! The giggling gourmet

The star of this year’s show was The cake Boss aka Buddy Valastro and therefore one of the highlights of the show was four of Cape Town’s best patisseries specializing in making cakes, that were having a competition in making  and decorating a cake best illustrating what Channel 186 (TLC channel) means to women. The cakes were amazing!! I could not keep myself from going back and back to this part of the show!

Long weekend, Cheese Festival, Simonstown

April 29, 2009 in Bacon, Breakfast, Food events, Food shows, Tables

I had a wonderful weekend again!!

We were fortunate enough to go to the Cheese Festival at Bien Donne on Saturday, the 25th. Although the weather was not very nice (it rained almost the whole day) we have enjoyed the day tremendously. We all wore our rain boots and with the help of umbrellas we survived the rain and cold. We looked at a cooking demonstration of the delightful Nataniël, which, as always, was highly entertaining. He made the most beautiful tartlets, which seemed very easy to make and I am definitely going to make his Leek and Cheddar Tortilla for breakfast this coming weekend. After this session we all were very hungry, and unfortunately, since we were a large group, and the festival was packed and very crowded, it took forever to get something to eat (that suited everyone), so we missed Jenny Morris’s cooking demo. We sampled lots of cheese, wines and other delicacies and it was a most enjoyable outing!!

I cooked a nice stew for lunch on Sunday. My Sister-in-law and her family that live inDelftinHollandarrived on Sunday night and we welcomed them with cinnamon sugar pancakes.

On Monday, after breakfast, that consisted of Bacon, eggs, fried tomato and toast, we drove via Seapoint, Clifton, etc to Houtbay and from there via Constantia to Simonstown. We had lunch at Bertha’s in Simonstown. After lunch we went to Boulders Beach and their children was thrilled to see so many penguins. It was a wonderful drive.

This whole week will be spending showing them all the nice places inCape Townand surrounds. It is very nice to do the tourist-thing again and I feel very, very blessed and fortunate to be able to do so many wonderful things!!
