Old fashioned Hertzoggies
December 20, 2012 in Baking, Biscuits
I grew up with Hertzoggies and Christmas will not be the same without these delicious cookies. Hertzoggies is named after General Hertzog, who was the Prime minister of South Africa from 1924 to 1939. These were apparently his favourite cookies.
Another cookie, called Jan Smuts cookies was named after General Jan Smuts, who was the Prime minister from 1919 to 1924 and leader of Hertzog’s opposition party. The cookies differ slightly but apparently would never be eaten by Hertzog’s followers!
I make these in larger muffin pans, but these were made by my daughter. She makes them very small and they are loved by my whole family. Although my Mother uses to bake them for a long time, I do not know her recipe and I use this recipe that was published in Huisgenoot Wenresepte number five.

I’m not sure if my comment on the other side but this is a nice simple recipe and it looks like it makes a lot
