The weekly menu

March 17, 2013 in Baking, Biscuits, Braai, Chicken, Dessert, Fish, Lamb, Meat, Meatless Mondays, Pasta, Pork, Poultry, Quiche, Savory tart, Seafood, Side Dish, Supper, Sweets, Vegetarian

Things in life do not always work out according to plan, but I strongly believe that God’s plan is always better. I was planning to attend the Eat-Out produce awards at the Old Biscuit Mill on Friday night where it was announced that the very talented Anel Potgieter from the blog “Life is a Zoo biscuit” is the Food Blogger of the year.

BlondieGirl was however writing a test on Friday morning and asked me to fetch her at 13:00 in Stellenbosch. I left earlier since I first wanted to go to an Antique shop in Stellenbosch and arrived at 12:30. Just after one BG phoned me to say that there was a terrible fire the previous night in Kayamandi that left 600 families (about 3000 people) homeless. She is on the Student Committee and her portfolio is Community Service and she had to do some things to arrange for volunteers, etc to assist the people affected by the fire. She asked whether I would be prepared to wait and help her with the arrangements for approximately 2 hours. Of course I said yes. In the end she only finished just before 18:00, which meant we could not attend the awards. I was admittedly not too upset as it felt good to be able to assist some fellow South Africans – albeit in a small, minute way.

This afternoon was mostly spent on preparing the weekly menu – I am so grateful that I am able to do this! I have a house, food and many luxuries that loads of people in South Africa does not have!

The weekly menu:

Monday: Onion, Cheese and Thyme Quiche

Dessert of the week: Chocolate swissroll with orange mousse filling

Treat of the week: Unbaked brownies

I hope everyone that reads my blog will find this valuable!

Monday: Mushroom Potpies with a green salad.

Yellowtail with mushrooms, green peppercorns and lime

February 22, 2013 in Braai, Fish, Seafood, Supper

I love summer and since it is weekend, it is also braaitime. Not that we only braai over weekends … My husband would braai every night if I would allow that! We have been cooking a lot on our Weber lately and look out for posts soon on cooking a leg of lamb, pork belly and more on the Weber.

I bought a lot of frozen yellowtails recently at our local Fruit and Veg for R29.99 per kilo! This is a real bargain and since yellowtail is also on SASSI’s green list you can eat this with a clear conscience and with the knowledge that you are not further depleting our endangered fish species.

The first time around I cooked the yellowtail following a recipe for curry fish that is featured in the latest copy of House and Leisure’s food magazine.

After this I cooked the yellowtail with mushrooms, peppercorns and lime and this was also a winner!

Duck Roasted in the Weber

January 31, 2013 in Poultry, Supper

New Year’s Food resolution number one was done by me! I have decided to cook more things that I have never tried before. I always thought it was impossible to cook duck successful and that it is only something a professional chef can do! It was surprisingly easy and a wonderful dish that I will cook again and again!

We roasted the duck in the Weber with potatoes in the dripping pan! It was a heavenly meal. For the recipe go to PinkPolkaDotFood!

Side dishes for the braai

December 19, 2012 in Braai, Side Dish, Vegetables, Vegetarian

It is summer, it is December, it is braai time in South Africa!

If my husband got his way, he would braai every night, especially during holidays. Recently he braai’d four nights in a row and told us he has compulsive braai disorder!

I could eat barbequed meat – whether it is lamb chops, chicken, fish, steaks, pork chops or boerewors, every night in a row for quite a while. The problem however is the side dishes. I cannot eat braaibroodjies twice in a row and although I love pap and sheba, I also do not want to eat it twice in one week!

Here are a couple of recipes for side dishes that goes well with a braai!

The first one can also be served as a main dish for vegetarians:

Lamb Sosaties

October 18, 2012 in Braai, Curry, Lamb, Meat, Supper

Recently I read on someone’s blog about lamb sosaties (I can unfortunately not remember on whose blog?). It reminded me of these lamb sosaties. Some years back, when we were still living in Pretoria, I was asked by our church to make 12 dozen lamb sosaties.

For weeks before the event I made sosaties, testing different marinades and flavour combinations. Friends and family was forced to eat sosaties for about 4 weeks in a row and this recipe was the one that everyone enjoyed the most. I made it a few times after this event and then got tired of it.

After reading about this lamb and dried apricot sosaties, I was so craving this that I just had to make it again. If you are looking for something really delicious to braai over the weekend, try this!

Harders on the braai for National Braai Day

September 23, 2012 in Braai, Fish, Lunch, Seafood, Supper

My family and I went up the West coast recently to look at the flowers. The flowers were absolutely in abundance this year! We enjoyed every minute of this trip!

flowers on the west coast

On our way back we went through the little town of Velddrif, an absolutely gem on the West Coast. We bought a number of snoeks, which we cooked some recently according to Jan Braai’s way to braai snoek. There was nothing left of 3 snoeks that we have braaied for 14 people and everyone said that it was the best braaied snoek that they have ever eaten!!

We also bought some harders, which hubby braaied that night when we came home. This is a wonderful and VERY affordable braai to do on heritage or any other day!

The person, who sold this to him, was a real fisherman and he knew his harders! Hubs loves braaing so he immediately told Nelius:  “I am only going to buy this, if I can braai this, so you must tell me how?” Nelius responded: “Nay, my larnie, you can braai this and it is very delicious!” and he told hubs how to do this. So to see this recipe go to PinkPolkaDotFood.

Norwegian salmon, cooked on the braai

July 5, 2012 in Braai, Fish

Most of the regular visitors to my blog, know that all my recipes posted on my blog are food that I have prepared for my family. I mostly cook supper and since the sun is setting so early at the moment in Cape Town, I am really battling to take good quality photos, because there is almost never enough daylight. Please excuse the quality of the photos.

I am also changing from http://pinkpolkadotfood.wordpress.com/ to http://www.pinkpolkadotfood.com/. I will terminate my other blog on 10 July 2012, and I can unfortunately not keep my subscribers, so please subscribe at my new blog, if you still want to get updates on my posts.

Norwegian salmon is another type of fish that I really enjoy. I don’t buy it often because it is on SASSI’s orange list and it is also quite expensive. Last weekend I could not resist and bought some.

Once home, hubs insisted that he wanted to do it on the braai, so we agreed to cook it on the Weber on indirect heat. To see how to prepare an indirect fire on the Weber, please visit ilovemyweber. The fish can also be cooked in a pre-heated 180º oven.

The salmon was first marinated.

Pork and Pineapple kebabs

May 7, 2012 in Braai, Meat, Pork, Supper

My Hubby use to love playing in the kitchen, but has not done it for the past couple of years. At last he got his mojo back and did he play this weekend!! Most of his food creations are either done on the braai or on the Weber.

The past weekend he took out his smoker and smoked some fish and chicken fillets. Especially the chicken fillets are delicious and I think it taste far better than any other smoked chicken that I have bought before.

He also made this pork and pineapple kebabs which were delicious.

I could only safe two of them to take some photos!
