Making homemade boerewors abroad

May 23, 2013 in Beef, Braai, Meat, Pork, Supper

Most South Africans living abroad really miss traditional South African food such as biltong, melktert, koeksisters and braavleis.

My Sister-in-law and her family live in Delft, Holland. They love the country and the lifestyle but they really miss their family and and a few other things like boerewors. My SiL started making her own boerewors according to my Mother-in-law’s recipe. She battled to get the casings and decided to make it without putting it into the casings!

So if you are living abroad and really yearn for some good old fashioned boerewors, make your own! For the recipe, please go to PinkPolkaDotFood!

Spicy chicken meatballs in a coconut sauce

May 21, 2013 in Chicken, Curry, Poultry, Supper

I spent most of Sunday in the kitchen, cooking and baking. Although I had a lot of fun, I also had one disaster after the other! But in the end everything tasted wonderful and taste is all that counts. :)

Chicken with oranges and red onions

May 16, 2013 in Chicken, Poultry, Supper

Every now and again the grey winter days in Cape Town can get the better of me. When I feel all grey and down I normally buy some bright flowers to cheer me up! Sometimes, however, I cook something colourful.

I made this chicken with oranges and red onions on a very grey day. I was going to cook some chicken and then I saw the bright orange oranges and decided it would go well with the red onions, so this dish was born.

My family loved the chicken dish and I could only keep a little to take photos the next day!

Mexican Mince soup with Tacos

May 15, 2013 in Beef, Meat, Soup

So autumn in Cape Town this year is really something special. We’re having some wonderfully warm days and at night you get a hint of just how cold this coming winter will be.

One thing I love about winter in Cape Town is that it is perfect soup weather! If you and your family enjoy Mexican food this Mexican mince soup will be a particular hit in your house!

Add some guacamole to intensify those rich Mexican flavours and you might just have a new favourite winter meal.

In my kitchen in May 2013

May 14, 2013 in In my kitchen

I was going to post my “IMK” post on the 1st of May, but then life happened and I got carried away!

I enjoy these “In my kitchen” posts so come-on and show me what you have in your kitchen, this month! If you do, please mention Celia of the blog Fig jam and Lime cordial and leave a message on her blog.

This month I have my favourite olive oil (bought at The Taste of Cape Town) from Greenleaf.  (I first tasted this at The Food Bloggers Indaba).

As always South African magazines for May:

Boerewors and Corn muffins

May 3, 2013 in Baking, Beef, Breakfast

I made these boerewors and corn muffins on a Saturday morning for breakfast with some left over boerewors of the braai we had the night before! Next time I am going to experiment with chorizo or pork bangers as the surprise in these muffins.

My family loved these, especially the boerewors surprise! They said it is like boerewors and pap in a muffin!

Breakfast ideas

April 21, 2013 in Breakfast

It is mostly so crazy in the mornings in my household that my family just have to eat breakfast cereal or rusks for breakfast. I do try to make something special for breakfast over weekends, though.

Warm baby potato salad with baby aubergines and eggs

April 15, 2013 in Lunch, Salad, Salads, Sauce, Side Dish, Supper, Vegetarian

We always associate salads with summer, but potato salad is just as nice served warm as it is cold.

Potato salad is mostly served with mayonnaise. Since my one daughter dislikes mayonnaise I am always experiencing with new potato salad combinations that do not contain mayonnaise. I love adding aubergines to potatoes. The combination just works for me.

This warm salad was a winner and was loved by everyone that ate it. It can be served as a vegetarian main dish or as a side dish.

PinkPolkaDot’s hotdogs

April 11, 2013 in Baking, Lunch, Meals in minutes, Supper

Most of you know that I have three children so I am not ashamed to tell you that I have made quite a few hotdogs in my life. My children forever wanted to invite friends over for sleepovers and making a dozen or two hotdogs are quick and easy and luckily most children loves hotdogs.

I believe every person should have a good hotdog “recipe” for those days that you are really feeling uninspired to make lunch or supper. These hotdogs also provides a good excuse to drink a beer or two!
