In My Kitchen – December

6 December 2011 in In My Kitchen

In my kitchen……

I am very fortunate that I have had a free supply of a wonderful olive oil for the past few years. My sister-in-law Sally has a brother (Sean) who farms olives near Swellendam in the Western Cape and produces award winning olive oil. Sally came to visit for a long weekend with my niece Catherine and she bought me a 2 litre box of the latest pressing and a bottle of their balsamic to try.

Whilst she was here Sally wanted to visit a local business in Howick called Romesco, they use Sean’s olive oil and she wanted to meet them. She very kindly bought me some of the Romesco products, I’ve already tasted the olives (divine) and as I type, our steaks for tonight are marinading in the Sicilian Dipping Sauce which is made of olive oil, balsamic, red wine vinegar, soy sauce and a smidge of harissa.

Whenever she visits, Sally goes back to Johannesburg with beef fillet from my trusty butcher as it’s so much cheaper here in the hollow. I spotted this biltong dust (biltong is the South African version of Jerky) while she was buying her meat and I have some ideas forming of what I want to make with it, watch this space.

Finally just to prove that I was definitely not born with a silver spoon in my mouth…..here is a picture of my obviously silver plated and much tarnished baby spoon which gets used as a sugar spoon.

To see what other blogger’s have in their kitchens go to Celia’s blog Fig Jam and Lime cordial

  1. I really like this ‘in my kitchen’ concept … *brain starts smoking as ideas abound*
You’re so lucky to have your olive oil supply!! Where in Howick is Romesco? Why didn’t I know about it whilst I still lived there?? Your marinade sounds mouthwateringly yummy!

    • It’s a nice challenge, just remember to link to Celia and let her know you have posted. Romesco is just by Sutherlands. The olives are done in olive oil and are superb, will have to hide them from The Troll! :)

      • Thanks – I might do the challenge whilst I’m on leave & have some spare time to string 2 thoughts together! I might also have to take a drive up to Howick between thoughts!!

  2. I know Olive quite welll – she’s Popeye’s sweetheart!

  3. Hi, love your post and hope to visit that nick of the woods soon. i just wanted to know if you are having problems uploading your pics?

  5. Oh what an awesome gift Sue – I bought some of that Romesco Pesto at Piggly Wiggly (I think!) and it’s delish. I just love your baby spoon – it reminds me of my mum’s sugar shovel that she used to use. I don’t have it – it must have gone to one of my sisters but I do have her sugar lump tongs – I shall post a pic of them. Have a great day hun xxxx jan

    • We didn’t have the steaks after all last night, so they are still marinading! will report back on the taste. I think it’s nice to use our old things.

  6. I love the baby spoon – and lucky fish to have Olive oil coming out of your ears!

    • Hi Debbie, apparently the Word Press platform would not accept our subscribers and so I lost everyone :( So far there doesn’t seem to be a facility to subscribe here, I have asked and am waiting for them to reply.I have absolutely no idea where your friend would get that, best bet is to phone some specialist shops. I googled and came up with zilch.

  8. You ar eso lucky to have an olive oil supplier!! I can’t wait to see what you are going to make with th ebiltong dust!

    • I am indeed! they were one of the sponsors at the Blogger’s Indaba, you would have received a little 250ml bottle in your goodie bag.

  9. Love the silver plated spoon. ;) I have managed to subscribe to Pinky and Tandy, but can’t find a place on your blog which says “subscribe.” Very odd and annoying. ;( xxx

    • I have asked the powers that be but have had no reply, will ask again, Pinky and Tandy aren’t on The Food24 WP platform. I do hope we can have subscribers.

  10. in my kitchen
woolworths take away trays lie empty, fresh fruit awaits my pleasure, hehe

  11. Back to blogging, so popping in to say hi
Lovely post, sadly most Olive oils in SA arent kosher, small and expensive variety to choose from

  12. Lovely post, thanks so much for playing! It’s so nice to have family produce, isn’t it? Our olive oil comes from Pete’s cousin, and that extra connection seems to make it all the more special. The olives and pesto look delicious too! :)

    • We visited the farm when Sean first started and the trees weren’t even bearing, he has worked very hard and done so well. The steak marinaded in the Sicilian dipping sauce was lovely.

  13. Lovely olive oil in such a bountiful supply! I am envious. Thank you for sharing your kitchen. Great to meet you.

  14. Love the spoon.
And the biltong dust- I’ll be back to see your plan in action!
