In My Kitchen – August

8 August 2012 in In My Kitchen, Sous Chef

In my kitchen….

…is this jar of hundred & thousands, now I know you are all thinking what a strange women, why would anyone have such a huge jar? My daughter used to go out with a pig farmer and a biscuit factory gives their broken biscuits to local farmers. Sometimes the biscuits were almost perfect, they often didn’t make it to the poor little piggies and sometimes there were unexpected goodies like a sack of hundreds and thousands! Sow there, now you know !

In my kitchen….

…is fellow blogger Jane-Anne Hobbs new book Scrumptious which I was very fortunate to win through the Sunday Times. It’s a lovely book, full of scrummy recipes and fabulous photographs to drool over. Jane-Anne styled all the food herself, read about it here on her blog Scrumptious.

Now I was pouring over it yesterday when one picture caught my eye, there was something very familiar about it.

When I was in England visiting my parents last year I saw a couple of old forks and thought they would be nice for styling, mum said I could have them and mentioned that they were from a set that she was given when we lived in Norway back in the fifties. It transpires that Jane-Anne’s Norwegian grandmother used to give her children pieces of silver cutlery for each birthday and Christmas, and that spoon in the pic is her mom’s. What a coincidence, there is no doubt in my mind….. that book was destined to end up in my grubby paws!

In my kitchen…

…are two gifts I received when I was in Cape Town for the Food Bloggers Indaba recently, one is from our favourite Italian mama Jan Tripeppi, I love the little utensils hanging from the ribbon, such attention to detail.

The other is from another blogging pal Usha Singh, she went to the trouble to make 130 packets of spices to go into the goodie bags at the Indaba, how thoughtful is that?

Finally in my kitchen…

…were these cake pops that I attempted at a workshop at Just Boutique last week, it was a fun evening out, but I think I shall stick to sprinkling hundred and thousands over cupcakes! :)

So what’s in your kitchen? to see what other food bloggers around the world are up to, go to Celia’s blog Fig Jam and Lime Cordial.

  1. You seems to have lucky streak for winning goodies – am a bit green about the free cookbook – is not just fabulous. just luv her recipes – right up my alley. Enjoy Women’s day, Sue.

  2. Wonder how many cupcakes you can adorn with hundreds and thousands before you get to the end of that jar…
What luck you have – do you by any chance know what the winning lotto numbers are – just thought I would check. The cook is exquisite!
    :-) Mandy xo

    • I think it should last me a few years! Wish I knew the numbers Mandy, I could do with a new car and more importantly a new kitchen!

  3. Cake pops look very cute…made for LOs birthday, will not attempt again in a hurry, very labour intensive.
I love hundreds and thousands, firm cookie topping in our house.

  4. Hi Sue, you sure are lucky!! I love your jar of hundreds and thousands. That will last you a life time:D

  5. What a good name- hundreds and thousands- here we are very prosaic- we call them sprinkles.
Your cake pops are very cute for the first time. I have made quite a few in my time- my niece and I made several hundred for the sailors stationed on Oahu for a Thanksgiving treat one year! They are a lot of work- but those young men’s faces lit up at the sight of all the care that had gone into a treat for them.
And- you are very fortunate- but I usually don’t even try and so I can’t possibly win- although I once won a children’s book that my grandson likes! :)
Thanks for opening up your kitchen!

    • Hi there, I don’t know where you get the patience to make several hundred cake pops! You’ve gotta be in it to win it! :)

  6. There must be hundreds of thousands in that jar. ;) Congrats on your win, yet again, It looks like a lovely cookbook. The only thing I ever won was a 9x magnifying mirror from Woman and Home, and fortunately, it never arrived. ;)

    • It is a gorgeous book, I shall be cooking from it soon I’m sure! I do seem to have a winning streak…hope it morphs into the lotto :)

  7. What happened to the pig farmer???

  8. Congrats on winning the book and you are most welcome to the spices i am not sure how some bags did not get any, because there were extras and we just doubled up in some bags–so i am really sorry that Tandy and some others did not get!!

    • There were so many bags it was easy to miss some, don’t fret about it. Thanks re the book, I’m enjoying the read.

  9. I always enjoy these posts!! Can we put this up on any date?

I hope you enjoyed a wonderful day, Sue!

    • I did have a relaxing day with Himself thanks Dottie, I don’t think there is any emphasize on what date it has to be done, just link back to Celia (such an nice interesting blogger)

  10. Millions of hundreds and thousands! :)

What a lovely cookbook, and how cool to find your matching spoon in there! And what a lot of effort your fellow bloggers have gone to to make treats for everyone – you’re right, I can’t imagine packing 130 packets of spice, nor tying the little utensils to every bag! Your cake pops are very cute – I’ve never tried making them before.. thanks for sharing your kitchen with us, Sue! :)

    • It is indeed a lovely cookbook, I even like the feel of the book cover….very silky smooth ( I used to sell paper so I like quality) Don’t you find that food bloggers are great sharers?
