In My Kitchen – November 2012

1 November 2012 in In My Kitchen

Celia of the blog Fig Jam and Lime Cordial started this monthly initiative, to see more of what food bloggers from around the world have in their kitchens click here.

In my kitchen….

…is this jar of pickled onions that I made at the end of September, I think we shall give them a try this weekend with some nice mature cheddar and crusty bread, sometimes the simple things in life are just the best!

In my Kitchen…

…is an abundance of HP, I bought Himself the big bottle of sauce back from England and whilst I was there my Godfather gave me the recipe book as a gift, expect to see a recipe from it soon.

In my kitchen….

…are these cute poaching bags that I just had to try, they work, but you need asbestos hands to get the egg out and the triangular shape is a bit odd.

In my kitchen…

…is this bag of macadamia nuts that I thought were a bargain, I have made something rather yummy with some of them, stay tuned.

In my kitchen…

…is this rectangular tart tin, I’ve wanted one for ages but they are rather pricey here in South Africa and I couldn’t justify buying one as I have a perfectly good round one. This one was reasonable in England so I treated myself.

In my kitchen…

…is this rather cool silicone mat which I used to make this lovely old fashioned Cream Swiss Roll. I also want to use it to make a neater  Pavlova Roll.

Click here to be taken to the Swiss Roll recipe.

  1. Pickled Onions….this reminds me of my Mom and Gran….they were forever making them when I was a kid.
Love those silicone baking sheets…mine gets used all the time, unfortuantely one of the kids cut something on it so it has a slit in it…grrrrr.
Have to practice swiss roll with my Tasha for her Consumers Practical exam next week.

    • I also love silicone sheets but I haven’t seen one with the lips around it before. We love pickled onions, it’s the pom in us!

  2. Oh Wow … opened the page and saw this huge jar of Pickled Onions,, Had to do that sucky shlurpy noise because my mouth just started Salivating. Yummy, Thanks

  3. Ooh, what cool stuff you have in your kitchen this month Sue. I never knew there was an HP cook book – looking forward to seeing what you make and such a novel idea to use the poaching baggies. I could go a slice of your lovely Swiss roll with a cup of tea.
    :-) Mandy

  4. I like the flexi baking sheet and tart tin – agree with you entirely about the prices being too high here for some baking goodies. I will be in “mudland” for xmas and new year – will look out for this.

  5. I wish we’d brought some HP sauce over here with us. The bown sauce here is runny and pretty awful. Love Macadamias, and they’re so good for you; that’s my excuse. :) I adore pickled onions, but they make me cough. :( A slice Swiss Roll would be great with breakfast. :)

    • You can’t beat real the real HP! I also love macadamias, in fact all nuts for that matter, the Swiss Roll was gone in no time I assure you.

  6. Lovely post Sue. You trip to mud island was definately very fruitful and hope you didn’t have to pay for the excess baggage ;) . I’ve got a ton of baking to do for over the next week or so and I’m hoping to do a swiss roll somewhere in there too. Keep well xx

    • I generally fly Emirates and they allow 30kg of luggage plus 7kg of hand luggage, you should have seen me the time before….the wheels refused to go round on my overloaded suitcase and I dragged it across London to the airport!

  7. i love “in my kitchen” – so cool – and those pickles … with a bit of mature cheese – yum!

    • Why don’t you do a ‘in my kitchen’ I bet you have loads of interesting things judging by some of the items you used in Dinner Divas. Go on, I want to see in your kitchen!

  8. Oooh, Sue, haven’t you done well with that swiss roll – it didn’t crack at all! They do take a bit of bravery, don’t they? I’m smiling at your pickled onions and cheese, and HP sauce, you can take a girl out of the UK, but you can never take the British out of the girl! :)

Thanks for sharing your kitchen with us! x

PS. I never have any luck with any of those poaching thingies. I’ve just about given up! :)

    • Yes, I’m afraid that as much as we love South Africa we do hang onto a few pommie habits :) I agree with you re the poaching things, I bought those loose silicone goodies that float…..hahaha training the eggs to bail is neigh impossible! :)

  9. Hi Sue-
I love pickled onions but have never made them- yum!
Everything in your kitchen looks great- but the jelly roll had me scrolling back up for a second look. I use the silicone pads for lining my baking pans , but never thought about using them for jelly rolls. Thanks for sharing and inviting us into your kitchen this month- I’m late with a post this month.

    • Hi there, I love that you call them jelly rolls, sounds so much more fun than Swiss Roll. Pickle onions are very easy to make and much nicer than shop bought.

  10. Thank you … Its the thought that counts… Have a good weekend… :-)

  11. Hi Sue, Your pickled onions and Swiss roll look fab.

  12. Oh thouse pickled onions look devine–& i mostly like those wonderful baking goodies.

  13. Wow, that’s a very lovely looking Swiss roll. I bet those pickled onions are yummy.

    • Thanks Lizzy, the Swiss roll was very good but we still haven’t got round to tasting them, the weather hasn’t been great so cheese and pickles hasn’t been on the menu.
