Campfire Chocolate Banana Cake

October 21, 2011 in Uncategorized

Now why would you want to bake a cake when camping, I hear you ask?

Because you can, of course!  And it’s fun to make, too.

When you’re camping for a couple of weeks, being able to bake something is a nice change.  So long as you take along the right equipment and ingredients, even a rich, moist, wickedly dark and slightly sticky chocolate cake is possible – and it will taste so good with that cup of coffee, freshly brewed on the fire whilst baking this cake.

Of course, this cake works just as well baked in a normal oven at 180°C, but with a bit of ingenuity, it can also be baked over your braai fire, using a cast iron pot. Oh, and did I mention it’s ridiculously easy to make, too?

For the recipe and instructions on how to make this next time you go camping, (or just as a good party trick next time you braai!) please click on the photos or go to:

  5. You are so clever making plans like this – I’m very impressed! And this looks absolutely delicious! Are you back here at Food24? Enjoy the weekend! xxx

  6. ooooh! how yummy and clever!!

  7. Wow, this looks really good, and so moist. I think I will stick to my oven though. Camping isn’t really my thing, but I’d love to watch you in action over that campfire, Zabwan. ;) xxx

  8. I am seriously drooling!! Yet another recipe of yours I will need to try.

I’ve made scones in a cast iron pot on the fire before. They came out rather well, so we’ve done it a couple of times now. I take the dry ingredients and wet ingredients in separate containers so I don’t have to measure anything at the campsite.

  9. Zabwan, you make the most amazing things on a braai/fire. Wow that cake looks so chocolaty and moist! Have a good week

  10. Thank you, Michelle!! Do give this recipe a try, it’s easy to make in a normal oven too :)

I pop in here at Food24 to put up links to recipes on my main blog, but I write other stuff as well over at “Fired Up Cooking SA”. Thanks for reading xxx

  11. Thanks, Carey!

  12. I know you don’t like camping, AD! But I would love to show you how much fun we have cooking over a fire – it’s very leisurely :)

Enjoy your Sunday, hope the weather is good there, it’s glorious here! xx

  13. H-D – you speak my language! Now I want to know how you made scones on a campfire???

    We’d be awesome together in a camp-kitchen, wouldn’t we! :D

  14. Thank you, superNBE – hope you’ll try the recipe, it’s really easy, especially made in the oven ;)

  15. Indeed! The major thing is that you need a cake rack that fits into the flat-bottomed cast iron pot, otherwise the bottom of the scones tend to burn a bit as the pot itself heats up. Then it’s just a matter of packing the coals all round the sides to make your oven. I’m sure the cooking technique is exactly the same as your cake!

  16. That looks so moist – yummy!

  17. U take camping to another level if u come up with food like that – no wonder your family enjoy camping. Looks delcious, Zabwan.

  18. The technique is almost the same! I guess a few coals on top would also help brown the tops? Thanks for the idea, I’m dying to try it :)

  19. It is a moist, delicious chocolate cake – egg free too!

  20. Thank you, Mitzi! The cooking is a large part of our holidays… :)

  21. WOW, i love it!

  22. Thank you, Caro :)

  23. Sounds delicious!!

  24. Thank you, Lisa :)
